+ What are we teaching our children about work?

[ Posted on 10.13.2017 ]

What are you broadcasting to your kids about work? Perhaps you love your job and regularly share accomplishments around the dinner table. Your kids are used to seeing you energetically tackle the workweek, coming home with plenty of energy for family time. Or, work is a black hole that you disappear into each Monday, stumbling home on Friday exhausted and disgruntled. Whether you love your job or hate it (and everything in between), what do you want to teach your children about work with your attitude and behavior? And if you have an unhappy relationship with work, can you really isolate that from your family? How much energy do you have for them when you are shut down over something that went wrong on the job? What are you teaching them about how you feel about them? Maybe you don’t have the perfect job. Maybe your boss can be a…

+ How can we live in the present?

[ Posted on 09.10.2017 ]

One of the greatest yoga teachers of our time, B.K.S. Iyengar*, tells us: “Poets and wise men since the beginning of the written word have enjoined us in all culture to live in the present moment because it is all we really have.  Have you ever wondered, while watching nature films on television in which herds of beautiful gazelles are constantly surrounded by marauding predators, why their life is not a living hell of fear and insecurity? How can they live their family lives of courtship, procreation, joy in their own physical perfection, knowing that the inevitable end will be in the lion’s maw? You cannot say it is dull fatalism, or lack of imagination. If they lacked imagination why would they run away so fast? The answer must be that they have the capacity to live in the present moment as it is and not as it might be.…

+ What is love?

[ Posted on 02.14.2017 ]

Enjoy this classic from Bruce M. Di Marsico on the kind of love we dream about. “To love is to be happy and do what you want. Be with.  Don’t be with. Smile.  Don’t smile. Be loving.  Don’t be loving. Be affectionate.  Don’t be affectionate. Give or say what you want. Take or ask for what you want. Do your own thing. If the one you love gets unhappy, it’s not because you are not loving them enough.  Their happiness does not depend on you.  If you find you want them to be happy, it is because you want it.  It’s not because you are a loving person or feel the need to prove to them that you are loving. You are loving if you are happy.  You will be loving if you are not afraid.” Read more

+ Who’s in charge? Me or my mind!!

[ Posted on 01.17.2017 ]

If only we could control our minds. Wouldn’t we be invincible then? Nothing could get under our skin. No one could intimidate us. We wouldn’t be afraid of anything. Our emotions would never get away from us. We could bring all our brainpower to whatever we are doing. Maybe we’d even be able to heal ourselves and overcome pain and suffering at will. Wouldn’t we be happy then! Perhaps the idea of controlling our minds is like trying to control an “unruly” puppy.  It’s the puppy’s nature to want to play. Any responsible dog owner wouldn’t expect a puppy to sit still all day long. Why even have a puppy? Perhaps the very thing we want to control in our minds is exactly the thing that makes our minds so wonderful. Our minds wants to play, skip from one thought to the next, resurrect memories at will, free associate, make…

Unhappiness is any form of believing that when we don’t get what we want, it means we are going to feel a way we don’t want.
