Q. What if I’m not unhappy per se, but I just want to be more successful in my life? Can The Option Method help me?
A. While some people come to The Method because they know they want to be happier, others are more in touch with their desire to be more successful and productive, to have better relationships, to navigate a major life event, to change something about themselves, etc. Often, in all these situations, if a person feels stalled, uncertain what to do or even paralyzed and frustrated, it is because practical and emotional issues are intertwined. The Option Method can help sort this out by identifying, clarifying and moving away from beliefs that get in the way of well-being and forward motion.

Q. Is the Option Method a coaching modality?
A. When The Option Method was created in the early 1970s, coaching did not exist. It was used mostly by psychotherapists, clergy, lay counselors and others in the helping professions. However, The Method meets all the core competencies laid out by the premier organization for coaching credentials, The International Coaching Federation. We have created Option Method training courses for coaches, which can be used to obtain and renew ICF credentials. The Option Method can be used as a tool within your coaching practice, as well as a coaching approach on its own.

Q. What is the difference between an Option Method Dialogue and Belief Centered Coaching?

A. An Option Method Dialogue is the purest form of The Method, captured in a very specific attitude and questioning technique. It’s goal is to help people to be happier by uncovering the beliefs behind unhappiness. Belief Centered Coaching brings Option Method principles and techniques into the coaching practice, but is combined with other coaching tools.

Q. Why do you use the term Option Method Teacher as opposed to Practitioner or Therapist?
A. Our goal is to empower others to learn The Method and use it for themselves and others. The core of The Option Method is embracing your choice to be happy or unhappy. The Method provides a structure for realizing that choice in every instance where you are not feeling or being the way you’d love to feel or be. We don’t want to create confusion or misunderstanding by labeling ourselves as therapists or any other mental health practitioner. We teach Option Method to those who want to be happy and help others to be happy. That is our only goal and expertise. ?Option Method Teachers are not licensed mental health practitioners.

FAQ

Q. What’s the best way to learn how to do The Option Method?
A. Our Services are designed to help people learn how to do The Method, for your own personal growth and happiness, as well as professionally. The progression that we feel works best is to do dialogues for your own personal growth with a qualified teacher, combined with learning about the basics of The Method through readings, workshops, tutorials, etc. Then, we recommend moving on to use the Option Method for yourself by mastering the self-dialogue under the guidance of a master teacher… If your goal is to work with others, the next step would be to practice with others, also under the guidance of a master teacher.  We offer in-depth training for those who want to become proficient in using The Method for both personal and professional use.

Q. How long does an Option Dialogue or Coaching Session last?
A. All sessions are 60 minutes.

Q. Where can I see a sample dialogue?
A. We have several Sample Dialogues on our site.
